Race Management Plan for Deep South Triathlon

Deep South Triathlon Refund Policy

The MS Race Management Team hopes this finds you in good health and well trained for the upcoming race. Our current plan is to hold the Deep South Triathlon in a manner that is safe and is in accordance with local guidelines. At this time based on our conversations with local officials we believe that the race will happen as planned.

Since the vast majority of race costs are incurred months in advance of race day and are non-refundable, it is extremely difficult to offer any kind of refund. However, we at MS Race Management pride ourselves on putting the athlete first, so to prove that point if the race is canceled due to COVID before 09/13/2020 we will provide each athlete the option of deferring to the 2021 race, donating 50% of their registration fee to Camp Rainbow, or a 50% refund. If the race is canceled due to COVID after 9/13 then participants will be offered a 75% deferral to the 2021 event.

We appreciate your understanding during this difficult time and hope that this eases a lot of your concerns around signing up for DST.


All athletes, spectators, volunteers, and staff are asked to self-assess their health. If anyone is experiencing a fever of 100+ or symptoms, they are asked to stay home.

Athletes who have experienced symptoms, or live with people who have symptoms, should self-quarantine and not compete in any event until the following is true:

1. At least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery
a. Recovery is defined as resolution of fever without use of fever-reducing medications and improvement in respiratory symptoms, e.g. cough, shortness of breath, etc.
2. At least ten (10) days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

Packet Pickup –

Saturday October 3rd 12:00pm – 6:00pm
Volunteer Briefing: 2:00pm – 2:30pm
Athlete Briefing: 3:00pm – 4:00pm
Location TBD

Masks and Social Distancing are required. We ask that you wait patiently and stay 6 feet away from others while waiting.

Race Morning –

Transition will open at 5am. As you arrive please proceed towards transition for body marking. We ask that as you are entering transition, walking around, setting up, etc. please wear a mask. Masks will be required by all participants race morning until the start of the race.

Swim Start –

Once transition closes, we ask that you move toward the green space above the swim start. This area will be marked off in corrals. Each corral will encompass a small group and be large enough for you to maintain social distancing. As the first corral enters the water then we will ask you to move forward as a unit into the next corral. This will occur until all participants have entered the water.

Transition Area –

Please be mindful of those around you. Social distancing will be observed between bikes on the bike racks.

Aid Stations –

Swim Course:

  • We will place water and Gatorade in cups on the table.
  • Pick up the cup with what you need and take it with you. If you need more, take two cups. If you need less, throw what is left in the trash.
  • DO NOT pick up a cup and place it back on the table.
  • DO NOT place your used cup back onto the table. Please discard your cups in the trash receptacle.

Bike Course:

  • Sports top water and Gatorade bottles will be available at 3 aid stations along the bike course.
  • Volunteers will have these available for you to ride by and grab.
  • All volunteers will be wearing masks and have on gloves while handling the bottles.

Run Course:

We highly encourage the athlete to bring their own hydration bottle or belt and nutrition.

  • We will place food and drinks on a table in front of aid station volunteers.
  • All aid station food and drinks will be placed in individual cups or individually wrapped.
  • Pick up the cup with what you need and take it with you. If you need more, take two cups. If you need less, throw what is left in the trash.
  • DO NOT take items out of a cup and leave the cup on the table.
  • DO NOT pick up a cup, take what you need, and put the cup back on the table.
  • Water, Gatorade – We will place cups on the table for you to fill your own bottle.
  • Coke, Ginger Ale, and Ice will be in cups on the table for you to pick up.
  • DO NOT hand your bottle to a volunteer. They are not allowed to handle your bottle.
  • After filling your bottle from the cup, place the cup in the trash.
  • *** DO NOT place your used cup or food package back on the table! ***
  • All aid station volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves.
  • Please understand it may take longer than normal at the aid stations.

Finish Line –

Race medals will still be handed out at the finish line. We still believe you have worked hard to earn our super cool medal, and we fully plan on celebrating you! Again, our volunteers will be wearing masks and social distancing.

Post-Race Food –

We will have food and drink available for all athletes after the race. This will be prepared and packaged by volunteers. These volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves while handling the food or while within 6 feet of anyone.

Awards –

We will have our awards ceremony at 3:00pm. This will occur as in years past with the podium boxes spaced a little further apart for social distancing.
